2022 Annual Dinner and Neva Orrell Memorial Lecture

November 1, 2021 4:15 PM

Neva Orrell Dinner Feb 2022

NEVA ORRELL MBE (1915 -2004)
In May 2021, South Ribble & West Lancashire Liberal Democrats decided to contest a by-election in the Leyland St Ambrose ward, which Neva Orrell had represented for over 40 years between 1960 and 2004 when she sadly passed away. During the campaign many people mentioned their fond memories of their former councillor.

Subsequently, we have decided to celebrate Neva's contribution to Liberalism in Lancashire and the North West by staging an Annual Dinner, including a special Memorial Lecture with guest speakers, Tim Farron MP and Neva's son, Cllr. Keith Orrell (York City Council).

Many longstanding members of the local party will remember Neva as stalwart and pioneer of community politics who was responsible for recruiting many activists in the region who have become standard bearers in their own right, including Tim Farron MP and Cllr. Richard Kemp CBE, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Liverpool City Council.

Neva's record is second to none:
• Over 40 years' service as a councillor on Leyland UDC and South Ribble BC,
• Lancashire County Councillor from 1981 to 1993 when Tim Farron took over,
• Chair of Lancashire County Council in 1987,
• Awarded the MBE and an Honorary Freeman of South Ribble in 1994.

As Tim Farron says: "Neva Orrell was my greatest hero"

We hope that as many South Ribble & West Lancashire LibDems as possible will join us at the special event in Leyland Methodist Community Centre on Saturday 5th February 2022 at 7.30 pm. As with similar recent events, the food will be provided by our resident Good Food Guide chef, Chris Burton Johnson who promises to be fit and well for the event having recovered from his heart operation in September.
